I found some yellow alstroemeria with a beautiful tint at the market and decided to bring them home. Along with some orange safflowers and curly dragon willow branches that I had on hand, I wanted to see how these flowers could transform the atmosphere of a room. I prepared three different Japanese ceramic vessels to create three distinct arrangements, aiming to bring enough brightness and presence to the living space.
With Willow Arch

The first arrangement uses a deep-colored, deep-shaped Japanese ceramic bowl. I bent the dragon willow into an arch and secured it, which forms the main structure. Right in front of the arch, I placed the yellow alstroemeria. The orange safflowers are positioned on both the left and right sides to add color balance, and a single stem of dracaena occupies one side. The arch creates a dynamic appearance, yet the overall composition remains simple and straightforward to assemble.
With Curcuma

For the second piece, I selected a sleek, vertical ceramic pitcher. The materials are almost identical, but I added a green curcuma, a seasonal flower that brings a fresh element to the display. The curly dragon willow is gently tucked in to support the shape. The refined silhouette of the pitcher lends an elegant tone to the combination. To style the entire space around the vessel, I arranged a cloth scarf and a woven basket nearby, extending the world of the flowers into the room.
With A Small Jar

The final arrangement features a small ceramic jar with a matching lid. I placed the vessel on the surface and laid its lid right next to it to showcase the unique texture of the pottery. This setup does not include the dragon willow. Instead, I used three slender, elongated green leaves whose specific name remains unknown. Inserting these three leaves creates a sense of motion. Even though the arrangement itself is compact, this movement gives it a distinct presence and upgrades the quality of the display.
Alstroemeria and safflowers are rarely chosen as the primary focus of a floral display. Alstroemeria is highly versatile when combined with prominent flowers, yet using it as the main subject can lead to hesitation. Adding movement through supporting elements helps to balance the composition. Selecting the flowers is important, but introducing motion with greens and branches holds equal weight. Having greens that naturally possess movement is ideal, but even without them, simply arranging materials to show motion—such as placing greens to flow to the left, as seen in the second styling—significantly enhances the presence and radiance of the display. The dragon willow played an essential role, but the way greens are utilized defines the overall impression.
Here in Tokyo, early July has brought temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, which feels somewhat contained compared to the intense heatwaves of recent years. However, the heavy humidity of the rainy season remains challenging. Even on these damp days, the bright combination of yellow and orange brings a refreshing clarity to the space.
I hope your space brings you a little extra joy today.
